Lithuanian Lego Model Creator Unveils New Departures Terminal at Vilnius International Airport

Renowned Lithuanian Lego model creator, Rokas Mikšiūnas, has unveiled his own rendition of the new Departures terminal at Vilnius International Airport (VNO), while the actual construction is set to be completed by 2025. Using 13,700 Lego blocks, Mikšiūnas meticulously constructed a model of the future terminal, which is now on display at the current Departures terminal of Vilnius Airport for passengers and their companions to admire.

According to Arnas Dūmanas, Director of the Development Department of Lithuanian Airports, the need for a new Departures terminal arises from the projected doubling of passenger traffic at Vilnius Airport over the next 10 years. Once the new terminal is connected to the existing infrastructure, the airport’s passenger capacity will double to 2,400 passengers per hour. The aim is to enhance the travel experience and improve the efficiency of Lithuanian air gateways through innovative measures. Inviting Rokas Mikšiūnas to build a Lego model of the future Departures terminal was a way to visually showcase the airport’s future image to the public and highlight the ongoing significant changes.

The process of creating the Lego model began in April, with Mikšiūnas spending most of the time planning the design and layout. He examined a 3D model of the building, calculated the exact number and type of Lego bricks required, and placed an order with the Lego manufacturer. Once he received the 15 kg (33 lbs) parcel on May 22, Mikšiūnas started assembling the model, which took him seven days of meticulous work from 8 a.m. until 12 a.m. He received assistance from eight of his friends to complete the project on time.

For Mikšiūnas, this Lego model of an airport terminal is one of his greatest works. Replicating the architecture of the Departures terminal facade posed a significant challenge, but the project was both interesting and personally important to him. Mikšiūnas considers himself an informal ambassador of Vilnius and aims to promote the capital city to as many people as possible, making it convenient for them to visit. The new terminal will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

The Lego model is currently displayed at the current Departures terminal of Vilnius Airport, allowing visitors to admire it and take photos. It is expected to be showcased at various events, conferences, and exhibitions in the future.

The actual new terminal, as per Arnas Dūmanas, is scheduled to be completed in less than two years, bringing about significant changes to Vilnius Airport by 2025. The new two-storey, 14,400 sq. m passenger Departures terminal is under construction, situated between the current terminal and the VIP terminal with a conference center. It will be connected to the existing terminal through a spacious gallery, facilitating smooth communication between the terminals.

The ground floor of the new building will feature a check-in area with self-service facilities and a time-saving self-service baggage system. It will also house public spaces, cafeterias, commercial zones, and airline offices. On the second floor, there will be a security checkpoint and departure and arrival gates for passengers from the Schengen area. The current terminal will be transformed into a comfortable space where passengers can wait for their flights, offering shopping, dining, and relaxation amenities.

Apart from passenger convenience and fast services, the focus of the new building is on sustainability. It meets A++ energy class requirements, emits low CO2, and aims for BREEAM Good certification. Sustainable construction ensures better performance, higher long-term returns, and a responsible approach to the environment and human health, according to Arnas Dūmanas.
