Meliá Hotels International continues to grow in Portugal and has announced the signature of an agreement to add a new hotel under the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand in Porto, the second largest city in the country. This new hotel for Spain’s leading hotel group will take the total to 14 operating hotels in Portugal with another 4 in the process of opening, taking the total number of rooms operated to around 2,600. The new Meliá Porto will open in 2021, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to Portugal, its third largest European market by number of hotels, behind only Spain and Germany.
Meliá Porto will be located on Avenida de Boavista, one of the most dynamic parts of the city, with residential and commercial areas, a wide range of leisure and dining options, and many tourist attractions such as the Monument to the Peninsular War, the House of Music, the Bom Sucesso Market or the Serralves Foundation, location of the Contemporary Art Museum designed by Zisa Vieira, one of the most famous Portuguese architects. The airport is also only 12 kilometres away.
The hotel will provide 180 rooms, all featuring the characteristic attributes of Meliá and the exclusive The Level service, providing a superior room and service experience for the most discerning travellers. True to the focus of the Meliá brand on the wellbeing of its guests, the hotel will also offer a YHI spa, state-of-the-art gym and different dining options serving healthy cuisine with superior quality local ingredients. Meliá Porto will also respond to the needs of business travellers through the Meliá Power Meetings concept, designed to stimulate dynamic and productive meetings that also help participants enjoy their work. Meliá Power Meetings provides innovative meeting rooms equipped with fitness balls, writable walls for brainstorming sessions, in-room relaxation areas and creative coffee breaks, among other features.
Porto has more than 1.7 million residents in its metropolitan area and is the second largest city in Portugal, behind only Lisbon. Located in the north of the country next to the mouth of the River Duero, its historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and its proximity to Spain makes it a very attractive destination for the Spanish, its biggest source of international travellers. Meliá continues to strengthen its presence in the country by leveraging its brand recognition. As well as Porto, the company operates hotels in the most important destinations in the country such as Lisbon, Funchal (Madeira), Braga, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Covilhã, Montijo, Setubal and Leiria, and will soon be opening on the Algarve.
