Saudi Arabia to Unveil a Unique Tramway Line in the Oasis of AlUla

The Royal Commission for AlUla has entered into a €500 million contract with Alstom to create a tramway line. This 22.4-kilometer tramway line will become the world’s longest catenary-free tramway line. The tram will have 17 stops located near archaeological sites and tourist attractions, linking five historic districts of the ancient city, including the old town of AlUla, Dadan, Jabal Ikma, Nabataean Horizon, and the ancient city of Hegra.

Alstom will be responsible for the design, integration, installation, testing, and commissioning of the system. The company will also provide full maintenance for the trams for 10 years, using cutting-edge technologies. Tram passengers will be immersed in a journey that retraces the history of AlUla, from oasis to desert, revealing the essence of centuries-old pilgrimages. The project promises to be an embodiment of history, luxury, and environmentally friendly transportation.

The opening of the line is scheduled for the second half of 2027, as part of the extensive sustainable transportation development plan, 360 Mobility. It includes the development of bicycle and horse transport, electric buses, and autonomous capsules.
