Garuda Indonesia Switches to Piece-Based Checked Baggage Policy

Garuda Indonesia will replace its weight-based checked baggage system with a piece-based baggage policy from 1 September 2026 as part of the airline’s ongoing service transformation and modernisation programme.

The new policy will apply to tickets issued on or after 1 September 2026 for travel beginning on or after that date. Passengers whose tickets are issued before the implementation date will retain the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even if they travel after 1 September.

From Weight to Piece Concept

Under the new system, checked baggage allowances will be determined by the number of bags passengers can check and the maximum permitted weight of each piece, replacing the current Weight Concept that calculates baggage based on total combined weight.

“This modernised approach provides passengers with greater clarity and certainty when planning their baggage, while offering enhanced value through checked baggage allowances of up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, or up to 64 kilograms in total, depending on the route, travel class and fare category,” the airline said.

New Checked Baggage Allowances

For domestic flights, Economy Class passengers will be entitled to one checked bag weighing up to 23 kilograms. Business Class and First Class passengers will receive an allowance of two checked bags, each weighing up to 32 kilograms, for a combined maximum of 64 kilograms.

On international routes, Economy Class passengers will be able to check two bags weighing up to 23 kilograms each, while Business Class and First Class travellers will also receive two checked bags of up to 32 kilograms each.

Higher Baggage Limits

The new Piece Concept increases baggage allowances across most fare classes.

On domestic services, Economy Class baggage rises from 20 kilograms to 23 kilograms. Business Class increases from 30 kilograms to 64 kilograms, while First Class increases from 40 kilograms to 64 kilograms.

For international flights, Economy Class baggage allowance increases from 30 kilograms to 46 kilograms. Business Class rises from 40 kilograms to 64 kilograms, while First Class increases from 50 kilograms to 64 kilograms.

Supporting International Standards

“The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty,” said Neil Raymond Mills, Garuda Indonesia’s Director of Transformation.

“Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure.”

Mills added that the Piece Concept is widely used across the global aviation industry and will help standardise services, improve baggage handling efficiency and simplify connections with international airline networks.

“Through this modernisation, we aim to provide greater value and a more comfortable and seamless travel experience, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance with applicable aviation regulations,” he said.
