Dubai has reached a major milestone in the development of urban air mobility after the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) certified VDX as the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The certification allows the facility to support future commercial air taxi operations and marks a significant step toward the launch of Dubai’s planned eVTOL transport network.
Developed by Skyports Infrastructure in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), VDX will serve as the primary hub of the city’s future Air Taxi network, with three additional vertiports currently under development.
First Certified Commercial Vertiport
According to the GCAA, certification followed a comprehensive assessment covering the facility’s infrastructure, operational procedures, safety management systems, emergency preparedness and compliance with aviation regulations.
The approval makes VDX the first purpose-built commercial vertiport anywhere in the world to receive full regulatory certification for eVTOL operations.
“The certification of the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport is a historic achievement for the UAE and a defining moment for the future of aviation,” said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA.
Built for Future Air Taxi Services
The four-storey VDX facility spans approximately 3,100 square metres and features two dedicated take-off and landing pads, rapid-charging infrastructure for electric aircraft and passenger processing facilities.
Once commercial services begin, the vertiport is expected to handle up to 170,000 passengers annually.
Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, said the certification demonstrates that the infrastructure, operational standards and regulatory framework needed for commercial eVTOL services are now in place.
Supporting Dubai’s Mobility Vision
The project supports the UAE’s “We the UAE 2031” strategy and Dubai Economic Agenda D33 by encouraging innovation, sustainable transportation and economic diversification.
Authorities said the certification reflects close cooperation between the GCAA, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, Skyports Infrastructure and other strategic partners working to establish Dubai as a global leader in Advanced Air Mobility.
With VDX now certified and additional vertiports under construction, Dubai has moved another step closer to introducing commercial electric air taxi services and creating one of the world’s first urban air mobility networks.
