Spain has activated a nationwide heatwave alert as temperatures are forecast to soar to 42°C across parts of the country during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer. The warning, issued by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and Civil Protection, remains in effect from July 5 through at least July 7, with the possibility of extending into midweek.
The extreme heat coincides with Spain’s first major summer holiday departure weekend, known as Operación Salida, when millions of domestic and international travelers take to the roads, railways, and airports. The combination of intense heat and heavy travel volumes has prompted authorities to urge extra caution, particularly for vulnerable groups and tourists unfamiliar with the country’s summer conditions.
Temperatures to Reach 42°C
The highest temperatures are expected in inland areas of Andalusia, Extremadura, and the Ebro Valley. Forecasts indicate that the Guadalquivir, Guadiana, Tagus, and Ebro river valleys could see daytime highs of up to 42°C, while many other inland regions will experience temperatures above 38°C.
Among the provinces facing the greatest risk are Seville, Córdoba, Badajoz, and Zaragoza, where high-level weather warnings have been issued. Forecasters expect Monday to be the hottest day of the heatwave before temperatures gradually begin to ease later in the week.
Hot Nights Add to Health Risks
In addition to extreme daytime temperatures, much of southern and eastern Spain is expected to experience tropical nights, with overnight temperatures remaining above 20°C and, in some urban areas, not dropping below 25°C. The lack of nighttime cooling increases the health risks associated with prolonged heat exposure, particularly for older adults, children, and people with chronic medical conditions.
Authorities are advising residents and visitors to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, seek shade whenever possible, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
Peak Travel Weekend Underway
The heatwave arrives as Spain enters one of its busiest travel weekends of the year. The annual Operación Salida marks the beginning of the peak summer holiday season, with millions of journeys expected by car, train, and air. Airports and popular tourist destinations are experiencing a full return of international visitors following the post-pandemic recovery in global travel.
Travelers are encouraged to prepare for extreme temperatures by carrying water, planning breaks during long road trips, protecting themselves from direct sunlight, and monitoring weather updates before setting out.
Wildfire Risk Remains High
Officials have also warned that the combination of intense heat, dry vegetation, and low humidity significantly increases the risk of wildfires across much of Spain. Emergency services remain on heightened alert, and visitors are reminded to follow local fire restrictions, avoid lighting fires or barbecues in unauthorized areas, and report any signs of wildfire immediately.
Meteorologists will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days, with further weather alerts possible if the heatwave persists beyond Tuesday.
