Woman’s Solo Travel

Why Poland Should Be at the Top of Every Woman’s Solo Travel Bucket List

Poland is one of Europe’s safest countries for women travelling alone. It ranks 25th on the Global Peace Index, ahead of the UK, France and Spain, and more women feel safe walking alone at night there than in Norway, Switzerland or Portugal. On the Global Terrorism Index 2026, Poland ranks 48th with a score of 1.682, well below the UK at 38th, France at 35th, and Germany at 29th, placing it firmly in the lower-impact tier for the continent. It also ranks first among selected destinations for solo female travel in the Women, Peace & Security analysis.

“Poland offers everything a solo female traveller is looking for: safety, culture, incredible food, stunning landscapes, and a warmth that surprises people when they discover it for the first time. It is one of the best places in Europe to travel as a woman, entirely on your own terms,” says Dorota Wojciechowska, Director, Polish National Tourist Office.

Warsaw is a capital city rebuilt almost entirely from rubble after the Second World War. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of Europe’s most significant post-war reconstruction projects, and the city now combines a skyline that holds its own against any European capital with a neighbourhood scene of indie cafés, riverside terraces and late-night bistros that make travelling solo feel genuinely easy.

The POLIN Museum, one of Europe’s most awarded, tells a thousand years of Jewish history through immersive exhibits that stay with you long after you leave. The Neon Museum houses over 200 restored communist-era signs, while the Koneser Praga Centre, is a 19th-century vodka distillery turned creative quarter.

Łódź (pronounced ‘Woodge’) sits 75 minutes from Warsaw by train and tells a different story entirely. Once the engine of Poland’s textile industry, its vast 19th-century factory buildings have been transformed into galleries, design studios, boutique hotels and rooftop bars. The Manufaktura complex, now housing the Museum of Art, a cinema and independent restaurants, is one of Central Europe’s great regeneration stories. The street art covers entire building facades. The film school here trained Academy Award-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski. The OFF Piotrkowska courtyard, strung with lights and full of independent restaurants and local designers, is one of the best evenings out in the country.

Then there is Olsztyn. The gateway to the Warmia-Masuria lake district, it sits among over 2,000 lakes and ancient forests, with a medieval Old Town at its centre where astronomer Copernicus once lived and worked. From the city, you can walk to a lakeside beach, kayak the Łyna River through forest, or cycle deep into one of the largest urban forests in Europe, all without a car. The region receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of comparable European lake districts.

Poland’s culinary scene is evolving fast, combining traditional regional recipes with modern creativity, from handmade pierogi and Warsaw’s iconic Wuzetka cake to food shaped by the landscape in Olsztyn and the wider Warmia-Masuria region. Freshwater fish from the lakes, mushrooms and honey from the forests, and traditional dumplings made with local ingredients. Dining costs in Poland remain significantly below equivalent Western European destinations.

Across all three cities, getting around is straightforward. The intercity rail is modern and affordable. Public transport costs around £1.30 a journey. Local and app taxis operate everywhere. And solo travel, spending a day at your own pace, exploring without a plan, is simply part of everyday life in Poland.

The appetite for solo travel has never been stronger. Global searches for “solo travel” have surged 230% over the past decade, reaching 1.6 million worldwide searches in January 2026 alone, with female solo travel among the highest-searched terms. Poland is where that demand meets the right destination.

Her Way. Poland., is a new campaign from the Polish National Tourist Office launching this month, bringing together destination guides, solo travel advice and firsthand creator content from three UK female travel creators exploring Warsaw, Łódź and Olsztyn this summer.
