Travelers can now journey directly between Malmö and Oslo by train following the launch of a new daily rail service connecting southern Sweden with the Norwegian capital.
Operating since 15 June 2026, the route provides a convenient and sustainable alternative to flying, linking the two cities via Sweden’s west coast and the city of Gothenburg. The service allows passengers to travel comfortably between Scandinavia’s major urban centers while enjoying scenic views of coastal landscapes and countryside along the way.
The launch represents an important addition to regional rail connectivity, offering a direct daytime connection that eliminates the need for train changes between Sweden and Norway.
Daily Departures Between Malmö And Oslo
The new service operates every day in both directions. Trains depart Malmö Central Station at 06:38 and arrive at Oslo Central Station at 13:16, providing a journey time of approximately six and a half hours.
Southbound services leave Oslo at 14:48 and arrive in Malmö at 21:25, allowing passengers to complete the trip in a single daytime journey.
Along the route, trains stop at several major cities and regional centers including Lund, Helsingborg, Halmstad, Varberg, Mölndal, Gothenburg-Gamlestaden, Trollhättan, Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad.
Comfortable Cross-Border Travel Experience
The service has been designed to offer travelers a relaxed and comfortable way to travel between Sweden and Norway. Passengers can use the journey to work, socialize or simply enjoy the changing scenery as the train travels north through southern Sweden before crossing into Norway.
For visitors heading to Oslo, the route provides direct access to a city known for its waterfront setting, modern architecture, cultural attractions and proximity to nature.
The connection is also expected to strengthen tourism flows between the two countries by making rail travel more accessible and convenient.
Restaurant Car Serves Meals Throughout The Journey
A key feature of the service is the onboard restaurant car, known as Krogen, which operates along the entire Malmö-Oslo route.
Passengers can enjoy hot meals in a dedicated dining environment while watching the landscapes of southern Sweden, the west coast and the Oslofjord region pass by outside the window.
Travelers are encouraged to reserve tables and pre-order meals when booking tickets, although dining reservations can also be added later through the operator’s booking platform.
Coffee, Snacks And Breakfast Available Onboard
For passengers looking for lighter refreshments, the restaurant car also features a self-service section offering coffee, tea, soft drinks, sandwiches, pastries and snacks.
Morning travelers heading north can pre-book a breakfast package that includes a cheese roll, cinnamon bun, juice and a hot beverage. Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free alternatives are also available.
The breakfast option can be added during ticket purchase or before departure, providing a convenient start to the journey.
Strengthening Sustainable Travel In Scandinavia
The launch of the direct Malmö-Oslo service reflects growing demand for sustainable transport alternatives across Northern Europe. Rail operators are increasingly expanding international services as travelers seek lower-emission options for regional travel.
By connecting two major Scandinavian cities without the need for transfers, the new route offers a practical alternative to air and road travel while supporting wider efforts to improve cross-border rail connectivity in the region.
For both tourists and business travelers, the service provides a new way to experience the landscapes of Sweden and Norway while traveling comfortably between two of Scandinavia’s most important destinations.
