Airbus and Lufthansa Group Celebrate 50 Years of Partnership at Berlin Air Show

Airbus and Lufthansa Group have celebrated 50 years of partnership at the ILA Berlin Air Show, while also announcing a series of new cooperation initiatives aimed at supporting fleet operations and advancing sustainable aviation technologies.

The milestone commemorates a relationship that began in 1976 with the delivery of Lufthansa’s first Airbus A300, the aircraft that helped establish Airbus as a major force in commercial aviation.

Approaching the 700th Aircraft Delivery

The two aviation giants highlighted the scale of their collaboration over the past five decades, with Lufthansa Group expected to receive its 700th Airbus aircraft later this year.

Lars Wagner, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, described the upcoming delivery as a major milestone that reflects the important role both companies have played in developing Germany’s aviation industry.

The Lufthansa Group has operated every major Airbus aircraft family, including the A220, A300, A320, A330, A340, A350 and A380. The airline has also served as a launch operator for several Airbus programmes, helping introduce new aircraft technologies into commercial service.

Expanding the Airbus Fleet

Lufthansa recently confirmed an order for 10 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, further strengthening its long-haul fleet.

The new order complements the airline group’s existing fleet of 43 A350s. In total, Lufthansa has now ordered 75 aircraft from the A350 family, including the larger A350-1000 variant that is scheduled to join the fleet in the future.

The A350 has become a key component of Lufthansa’s long-haul strategy, offering improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions and enhanced passenger comfort compared with previous-generation aircraft.

New Support Agreement for A220 Fleet

One of the key agreements announced at the air show involves a comprehensive component services contract covering Lufthansa Group’s Airbus A220 fleet.

The agreement is designed to support the efficient operation of the airline’s growing A220 fleet across its various carriers by ensuring access to spare parts and maintenance support.

The A220 represents the smallest aircraft family currently operated within the Lufthansa Group and plays an increasingly important role on regional and short-haul routes.

Focus on Sustainable Aviation

Airbus and Lufthansa also used the event to reaffirm their shared commitment to reducing aviation’s environmental impact through technological innovation.

Among the sustainability initiatives highlighted was the introduction of SharkSkin technology on Lufthansa’s Airbus A330 fleet.

The specialised aircraft coating mimics the structure of shark skin and is designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, helping lower fuel consumption and associated carbon emissions.

The project forms part of broader efforts by both companies to improve aircraft efficiency while supporting the aviation industry’s long-term sustainability goals.

Strengthening Europe’s Aviation Leadership

Speaking at the event, Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr described the partnership as a cornerstone of European aviation, noting that Lufthansa has taken delivery of more Airbus aircraft than any other airline group worldwide.

With new fleet investments, maintenance partnerships and sustainability projects underway, Airbus and Lufthansa signalled their intention to continue working together to advance aircraft technology and strengthen Europe’s position as a global aviation leader.
