England Could Introduce Tourist Taxes Of Up To £11.50 Per Night Under New Plans

Travelers visiting parts of England could soon face additional accommodation costs under new plans allowing local authorities to introduce tourist taxes on overnight stays.

The proposed changes would allow selected regional authorities to introduce visitor charges covering hotels, bed-and-breakfast accommodation and short-term rental properties.

The move forms part of broader efforts to generate additional funding for local infrastructure while responding to increasing tourism pressures in popular destinations.

Tourist Tax Powers Could Be Given To 13 Regional Authorities

Under the proposals, only areas administered by 13 strategic metropolitan authorities in England would gain powers to introduce the surcharge.

Each regional mayor would decide independently whether to implement the tax and determine how much visitors would pay.

This means travelers could encounter significantly different accommodation costs depending on where they stay, with some destinations potentially choosing not to introduce the charges at all.

London is among the areas expected to have the option to introduce the fee.

Overnight Charges Could Range From £3 To £11.50

Current proposals suggest the surcharge could range from approximately £3 to as much as £11.50 per night depending on local decisions.

The additional charges would apply on top of standard accommodation costs and could affect hotels, guesthouses and short-term rental platforms.

Officials say revenue generated from the tax would be used for local investment projects and infrastructure improvements.

England Following Wider European Tourism Trend

The proposals reflect a broader trend across Europe where destinations increasingly use tourism taxes to generate additional revenue from growing visitor numbers.

Many popular tourist destinations across Europe already operate similar systems, particularly in cities facing high visitor volumes and increased pressure on public infrastructure.

Supporters argue tourism taxes help fund services used by visitors, while critics warn additional charges could affect destination competitiveness and increase travel costs.

If introduced, the changes could reshape accommodation pricing across parts of England and create additional considerations for travelers planning future trips.
