The UK has raised its national terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe” for the first time in more than four years, following a stabbing incident in north London that has been declared a terror attack.
The decision means a terrorist attack is now considered highly likely, according to government officials, marking a significant shift in the country’s security posture.
Attack In North London Triggers Heightened Alert
The move comes after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green on Wednesday. The incident is being treated as terrorism by the Metropolitan Police.
The victims, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, 76, were taken to the hospital with knife injuries. A suspect, Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with attempted murder and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Authorities have described the attack as part of a concerning pattern of violence targeting the UK’s Jewish community.
Threat Level Reflects Broader Security Risks
Dan Jarvis said the public should remain “alert and vigilant” but not “alarmed,” stressing that the decision to raise the threat level was not based solely on the latest incident.
Officials pointed to a wider increase in both Islamist and extreme right-wing threats as contributing factors behind the change.
The UK’s threat levels range from low to critical, with “severe” representing the second-highest level, indicating that an attack is highly likely.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged the concern the decision may cause, particularly among Jewish communities.
She confirmed that the new classification reflects the current risk environment and emphasised ongoing efforts to ensure public safety.
The government continues to monitor intelligence and security developments closely, with law enforcement and counter-terrorism agencies maintaining heightened vigilance across the country.
