Dubai Dining Scene Shifts As Buddha-Bar Pauses And Akebeko Closes

Dubai’s ever-evolving hospitality landscape is entering another phase of transformation, as iconic venues pause, others close permanently, and major hotel investments signal a renewed push toward reinvention.

Among the most notable developments, Buddha-Bar Dubai – a long-standing fixture of the city’s nightlife and dining scene – has temporarily closed its doors. The venue is scheduled to reopen on July 16, suggesting a strategic reset rather than a full exit, in line with a broader trend of concept refreshes across the emirate.

At the same time, Akebeko Dubai has confirmed its permanent closure. Known for its premium Japanese cuisine and beef-focused menus, the restaurant had built a loyal following among diners seeking specialised, high-end experiences. Its exit reflects the mounting pressures facing operators, including rising costs, shifting consumer behaviour and the need to continuously innovate in a highly competitive market.

The changes come as JW Marriott Marquis Dubai embarks on one of the most significant refurbishment programmes currently underway in the city. The property, one of Dubai’s most recognisable hotel landmarks, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation covering all 1,608 rooms and suites, alongside two Executive Lounges.

In addition to guestroom upgrades, the hotel has begun refurbishing three of its signature dining venues, with plans to introduce a new collection of homegrown food, beverage and lifestyle concepts in the coming months. The repositioning reflects a deliberate strategy to remain competitive in Dubai’s fast-moving luxury hospitality segment, where both legacy properties and new entrants are continually raising the bar.

Describing the project as a “thoughtful evolution”, the hotel emphasised a shift toward experiences that feel more intentional and aligned with modern guest expectations – a sentiment increasingly echoed across the industry.

Taken together, these developments highlight a defining characteristic of Dubai’s hospitality ecosystem: constant reinvention. The city’s dining scene, in particular, operates on a rapid cycle of openings, closures and relaunches, driven by a diverse resident base, strong tourism flows and a sustained appetite for novelty.

While some well-known names may disappear – temporarily or permanently – they are often replaced by new concepts designed to capture emerging trends and evolving tastes. Industry insiders point to this fluidity as a strength rather than a weakness, allowing Dubai to remain one of the most dynamic food and beverage markets globally.

As the sector continues to adapt, the latest wave of changes underscores a clear reality – in Dubai, standing still is not an option.
