Emirates Expands Autism-Friendly Travel Rehearsal Programme Worldwide

Emirates is expanding its efforts to make air travel more inclusive, announcing the global rollout of its “Travel Rehearsal” programme designed to support children and young adults with autism.

Over the past year, the airline has organised more than 40 rehearsals across six continents, helping over 250 families prepare for the often overwhelming experience of navigating an airport. The initiative allows participants to simulate the full journey – from check-in to boarding – in a controlled and supportive environment.

The programme was initially piloted in Dubai, where strong feedback from families, schools and autism organisations encouraged Emirates to formalise and expand the concept across its international network.

Since April 2025, rehearsals have taken place in cities including Barcelona, London, Sydney, Toronto and Hong Kong, among many others. Each session is delivered in collaboration with airport authorities, security teams and specialist education centres.

At the core of the initiative is the recognition that airports can present significant challenges for neurodivergent individuals. Sensory overload, unfamiliar procedures and crowded environments can make travel stressful or even inaccessible. According to industry data, a large majority of families with autistic members are hesitant to travel due to these factors.

The rehearsals aim to reduce that barrier by introducing predictability. Participants practice key stages of the journey, including baggage drop, immigration and security checks, while also becoming familiar with airport surroundings such as retail and dining areas. In some locations, Emirates has arranged access to real aircraft, giving participants an opportunity to experience boarding in advance.

To support the programme, more than 35,000 Emirates employees have received training to better assist passengers with autism and other hidden disabilities. Staff are equipped to guide travellers through each stage of the airport experience, helping to reduce anxiety and improve confidence.

Sami Aqil Abdullah, Senior Vice President of Emirates Airport Services Outstation and Business Support, described the initiative as a “resounding success,” highlighting the collaboration between airline teams, airport partners and families. He said the airline plans to further expand the programme, reaching more locations and supporting more travellers in the coming years.

The airline is also continuing to enhance its onboard and digital accessibility offering. Sensory products and fidget tools are available across all cabin classes, while its Accessible and Inclusive Travel Hub provides detailed guidance tailored to different needs, including autism-friendly travel preparation resources.

As Emirates continues to develop its accessibility strategy through 2026, the Travel Rehearsal programme is emerging as a key step toward making air travel more inclusive – helping families who previously avoided flying gain the confidence to take to the skies.
