The Venezuelan government has revoked the operating permits of six international airlines after they failed to resume flights to Caracas within a 48-hour deadline imposed by President Nicolás Maduro’s administration. The sanctions apply to Iberia, TAP, Avianca, Latam Colombia, Turkish Airlines and Gol, all of which suspended operations after a US advisory warned carriers of heightened risks in Venezuelan airspace.
The ultimatum, issued earlier this week, demanded that airlines restore their routes to the country or lose their right to operate in Venezuela. When the deadline expired on Wednesday, authorities moved forward with the revocations. The decision effectively bars the airlines from returning to the Venezuelan market unless the government reverses course.
In a statement announcing the sanctions, officials framed the action as a matter of national sovereignty. “The national government, in a sovereign decision, told the companies: if you do not resume flights in 48 hours, do not resume them any more. You keep your planes and we will keep our dignity,” the government declared.
The airlines had suspended flights in response to a US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warning advising carriers to avoid Venezuelan airspace due to potential safety and security threats. The advisory prompted multiple international operators to halt services amid concerns about operational risk and liability.
The revocation deepens Venezuela’s isolation at a time when international connectivity is already strained. The affected airlines represented significant links between Caracas and major hubs in Europe and the Americas, and their withdrawal will likely concentrate traffic among a smaller group of regional carriers still operating in the country.
With no indication that the Maduro government plans to ease its position, and with safety restrictions still in place from the United States, the standoff underscores the geopolitical and operational uncertainty shaping Venezuela’s aviation landscape.
