If you love cities that wear their history on cobblestones, mark your maps: Ptuj, Slovenia’s oldest town, has just been named Europe’s Best Heritage City 2026 by European Best Destinations (EBD).
Set along the River Drava, Ptuj isn’t a museum behind glass — it’s a living, breathing time capsule. EBD experts praised the city for its seamless blend of medieval charm, vibrant traditions, and a wine culture that flows as freely as its festivals.
At the heart of it all stands Ptuj Castle, which has watched over the city for more than a thousand years — a reminder that history here isn’t something you visit; it’s something that looks back at you.
The town pulses with life year-round: from the spring Kurentovanje Carnival, where masked dancers chase away winter, to Art Stays, a summer celebration of contemporary art, and the grape-harvest feasts that turn autumn into a toast to heritage itself.
Europe’s Top 10 Heritage Cities 2026 (EBD ranking):
Ptuj, Slovenia
Bruges, Belgium
Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, Portugal
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Albi, France
Florence, Italy
Český Krumlov, Czech Republic
San Gimignano, Italy
Zamość, Poland
Toledo, Spain
Rounding out the list are familiar legends — Bruges, the “Venice of the North”, and Angra do Heroísmo in the Azores, both securing top-three spots. Notably, Poland’s Zamość claimed ninth place, earning praise as the “Padua of the North” for its beautifully preserved Renaissance architecture.
So, if you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through Europe’s past without the crowds of Florence or the price tags of Bruges, Ptuj might just be the continent’s best-kept secret — a story that still writes itself, one festival at a time.
