Delta Air Lines is preparing to make history next spring with the launch of nonstop flights from New York’s JFK Airport to both Malta and Sardinia—the first-ever direct connections between the United States and either Mediterranean island.
Service to Sardinia, Italy’s sun-soaked island known for its beaches and rugged landscapes, will begin May 20, 2026, with four weekly flights. Just a few weeks later, on June 7, Delta will inaugurate three weekly flights to Malta, an island nation steeped in history and culture at the crossroads of Europe and North Africa. Both routes are seasonal and scheduled to run through October 23, 2026.
Flights will be operated on Delta’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, offering passengers a choice of business class, premium economy, and economy cabins.
The decision to serve both islands came after Delta turned to its community of travelers and employees for input. In August, the airline asked SkyMiles members and staff to vote on three potential new Mediterranean destinations: Sardinia, Malta, or Ibiza. While customers leaned toward Sardinia and employees favored Malta, Delta ultimately chose to launch both, calling it a win-win for travelers and team members alike.
With these additions, Delta continues to expand its transatlantic network, giving U.S. travelers fresh access to two Mediterranean destinations long beloved by Europeans but previously only reachable with a connection.
