Chancery Rosewood Opens in London’s Former US Embassy Building

London’s Mayfair has a new landmark hotel as the long-anticipated Chancery Rosewood opens its doors inside the city’s former US Embassy on Grosvenor Square. After four years of careful restoration, the modernist building designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1960 has been transformed into an all-suite luxury retreat while retaining its historic character.

The Grade II listed property has been reimagined by Sir David Chipperfield, with interiors by French architect Joseph Dirand. The result is a blend of diplomatic heritage and contemporary luxury, offering 144 suites and penthouses, some with landscaped terraces. Guests are welcomed without the traditional front desk, escorted directly to their suites, and enjoy services such as flexible check-in, house car transfers, and butler service for signature accommodations.

Among the standout features is the preservation of the building’s iconic gilded eagle sculpture by Theodore Roszak, crafted from B-52 bomber aluminium, which continues to preside over Grosvenor Square.

The hotel’s culinary programme includes eight restaurants and bars, led by Serra with southern Mediterranean flavours and Tobi Masa, the London debut of Michelin-starred chef Masayoshi “Masa” Takayama. Adding further excitement, the building will also house the first European outpost of New York’s cult Italian-American restaurant Carbone, making the property a dining destination in its own right.

Wellness takes centre stage with the Asaya Spa and the first hotel-based Taktouk Clinic, blending dermatological treatments with traditional spa offerings. Facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, Technogym-equipped fitness centre, and a membership programme with exclusive benefits.

Art is woven throughout the property, with a 700-piece collection curated by Cramer & Bell. Works by established and emerging artists, including commissions by Sir Christopher Le Brun and Anthony Grace, nod to both American history and the building’s diplomatic legacy. Suites and houses carry names tied to the US Embassy’s past, such as Kennedy House and John Adams House, while penthouses Charles House and Elizabeth House provide expansive private spaces for entertaining.

Event facilities range from a grand ballroom for 750 guests to more intimate salons and pavilions, cementing the hotel’s role as a venue for high-profile gatherings.

The opening of the Chancery Rosewood represents more than just a new luxury hotel—it’s a striking example of adaptive reuse, bringing a storied piece of modernist architecture into the future of London hospitality while preserving its historic soul.
