The U.S. Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Saint Lucia, warning travellers that violent crime remains a concern across the Caribbean island, including in areas frequented by tourists.
The advisory reminds U.S. citizens that serious crimes can occur anywhere in Saint Lucia and encourages visitors to exercise increased caution throughout their stay.
Violent Crime Can Occur Across the Island
According to the updated advisory, U.S. citizens and other foreign visitors have been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary and rape while travelling in Saint Lucia.
The State Department also noted that violent crime has affected guests staying at tourist resorts and warned that police response times “are not as fast as in the United States.”
Petty Theft and Tourist Scams
Officials also warned that petty theft remains common, particularly in popular tourist areas. Most crimes involving foreign visitors are opportunistic, including purse snatching and pickpocketing.
The advisory further cautions travellers about overcharging, scams and aggressive vendors in tourist districts. However, the State Department noted that many major tourist attractions are patrolled by dedicated tourist police officers who can assist visitors.
Safety Recommendations for Visitors
The U.S. Department of State advises travellers to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid displaying valuables such as jewellery, cash or expensive electronics, and exercise additional caution when walking or driving after dark.
Officials also recommend that visitors do not physically resist if confronted during a robbery, as doing so could increase the risk of injury.
Travellers planning a trip to Saint Lucia are encouraged to review the latest official travel advisory before departure and follow local safety guidance throughout their visit.
