Prague Airport Opens eGATE Fast-Track To UK And Asian Travellers

Prague’s Václav Havel Airport has expanded access to its automated border-control eGATE system, allowing travellers from the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea to use fast-track departure lanes when leaving the Schengen Area.

The new system officially became available on May 15 and marks one of the Czech Republic’s most significant airport technology upgrades in recent years.

The expansion comes shortly after the European Union introduced the biometric Entry/Exit System across external Schengen borders, accelerating efforts to modernise passenger processing throughout Europe.

Faster Departures For Eligible Travellers

Under the new rules, eligible passengers aged 15 and over can now use automated eGATE lanes at Prague Airport’s Terminal 1 when departing on non-Schengen flights.

Travellers simply scan a biometric passport, complete a facial recognition check and proceed through border control in less than 20 seconds.

Until now, most non-EU nationals were required to pass through staffed immigration booths even when automated gates remained underused during busy travel periods.

The airport says the updated policy will significantly reduce waiting times during the peak summer season as international passenger numbers continue to rise.

Pressure Builds Ahead Of Summer Travel Peak

Prague Airport expects particularly heavy traffic in July and August, with the Czech Republic also preparing to host several major international conferences and business events.

Corporate travellers and frequent business visitors are expected to benefit most from the faster border process, especially those travelling regularly under visa-free arrangements.

The move also supports the wider implementation of the EU’s Entry/Exit System, which records biometric data for non-EU travellers entering and leaving the Schengen Area.

Strict Conditions Still Apply

Despite the faster processing, travellers must still meet several conditions to use the automated lanes.

Passengers are required to carry a biometric passport with at least six months of remaining validity.

The eGATE system is currently only available for departures from Terminal 1, which handles non-Schengen international flights.

Families travelling with children under 15, as well as passengers selected for additional checks, will continue using manual border-control booths.

Authorities also warned that the Entry/Exit System automatically flags travellers who exceed the Schengen Area’s 90-day limit within a 180-day period.

Prague Positions Itself Among Europe’s Most Efficient Airports

The Czech Interior Ministry is now reportedly considering whether to extend eGATE eligibility to additional low-risk countries including the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

If approved, Prague could become one of the most accessible automated-border airports in continental Europe, joining major international hubs such as Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

The expansion reflects a wider trend across European aviation as airports invest in biometric technology to improve passenger flow while maintaining stricter border security standards.

For travellers heading to Prague this summer, the changes could mean significantly shorter queues and a smoother departure experience from one of Central Europe’s busiest airports.
