Dozens of Flights Cancelled at Heathrow as Snow and Ice Disrupt Operations

Winter weather continues to disrupt air travel at London Heathrow Airport, with dozens of flights cancelled and hundreds delayed as snow, ice and freezing temperatures affect airport operations and aircraft rotations.

According to flight tracking and industry data, at least 22 departing flights and 23 arriving flights have been cancelled at Heathrow due to weather-related disruption. In addition, more than 200 departures and over 60 arrivals have experienced delays as airlines contend with extended de-icing procedures, reduced runway efficiency and knock-on effects from disruption elsewhere in Europe.

Several routes have been particularly affected. Flights between Heathrow and destinations such as Aberdeen, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam have been cancelled, reflecting both local weather conditions and wider disruption at northern European hubs. British Airways, Heathrow’s largest operator, has cancelled several services, including multiple flights to and from Amsterdam, as severe weather continues to impact aircraft availability and scheduling.

Airport operators said Heathrow has remained open throughout the cold snap, but warned that icy conditions and snowfall can significantly slow ground operations. Aircraft must undergo mandatory de-icing before departure, a process that increases turnaround times and reduces overall capacity during peak periods.

The disruption at Heathrow comes amid widespread winter travel chaos across Europe. Severe weather has affected major airports in the Netherlands, France and Germany, creating knock-on delays for connecting flights and contributing to congestion at one of the world’s busiest international hubs.

Passengers travelling through Heathrow have been advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and allow extra time for check-in and security. Airlines have also urged travellers to monitor updates closely, warning that further delays or cancellations remain possible if weather conditions fail to improve.

With cold weather warnings still in place across parts of the UK, Heathrow officials said some disruption could persist as airlines work to stabilise schedules and reposition aircraft once conditions begin to ease.
