Turkey has blocked access to eight major international eSIM service providers, dealing a blow to travelers who rely on affordable mobile internet while abroad. According to local media reports, the country’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has restricted platforms such as Saily, Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Instabridge, Mobimatter, Alosim, and BNESIM.
These services, known for offering remotely programmable virtual SIM cards, have grown in popularity among tourists looking to avoid expensive roaming charges or the hassle of buying local SIM cards. However, as of now, their websites are inaccessible from within Turkey.
eSIM technology allows users to download a digital SIM profile directly onto their smartphone or tablet without visiting a physical store. For many international travelers, it has become a go-to solution for securing reliable and affordable data on the go.
The impact of this restriction will be felt most acutely by Turkish citizens traveling abroad, who previously used these platforms to purchase travel data plans before departure. Without access to these services, they may be forced to rely on more expensive roaming packages or buy local SIM cards at their destination.
There are still ways to stay connected. Tourists are advised to install and activate eSIMs before entering Turkey, as preloaded profiles will continue working even after arrival. Alternatively, travelers can purchase a physical SIM card or a locally issued eSIM from a Turkish mobile operator upon arrival.
While this move highlights the growing scrutiny over cross-border digital services, it also serves as a reminder for international travelers to plan mobile connectivity ahead of their trips, especially if visiting Turkey.
