Southwest Airlines to Begin Selling Flights to Europe in Februar

Southwest Airlines, the Dallas-based low-cost carrier, is preparing to enter the European market through a newly forged commercial partnership with Icelandair. Starting next month, Southwest passengers will have access to Icelandair’s extensive European network, marking a significant expansion for the airline.

A Strategic Partnership

Southwest Airlines and Icelandair began their partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September 2024, culminating in a formal strategic agreement signed on January 15, 2025. This collaboration represents Southwest’s first foray into transatlantic operations, leveraging Icelandair’s established routes to provide passengers with greater travel options.

Baltimore Takes the Lead

Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) has been chosen as the launch hub for this transatlantic partnership. Since February, Southwest customers flying from BWI have been able to seamlessly connect to Icelandair flights bound for Reykjavik International Airport (KEF). Once in Reykjavik, travelers can access 34 European destinations, including major cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Berlin, Lisbon, and Dublin.

Exploring Hidden Gems

Icelandair’s network includes connections to Europe’s most iconic cities, unique destinations in Greenland, and four regional airports within Iceland. These routes are expected to appeal to adventurous travelers seeking more unconventional experiences.

Southwest Airlines, known for its extensive domestic network and low-cost business model, is partnering with Icelandair to broaden its service offerings and compete in the global market. Travelers will enjoy the convenience of booking through Southwest while gaining access to a wealth of new international destinations.
