Speaking at the Tourism Innovation Summit (TIS) 2024 in Seville, Misa Labarile, Policy Officer for Tourism at the European Commission, emphasized this point:

“We don’t want to regulate the technology itself—we love AI and its potential to improve your strategies and experiences—but we want to regulate its users to ensure safety and transparency.”

Opportunities for SMEs and Startups

The AI Act also provides a crucial opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups to harness the power of AI in tourism. Recognizing the financial and operational challenges faced by smaller businesses, the legislation includes a sandbox feature. This creates a “safe space” for SMEs to test and refine their AI solutions before launching them in the market. The sandbox allows businesses to experiment with their AI models without the fear of costly failures, providing them with a tried and tested tool when they go to market.

Moreover, in the coming years, AI factories—specialized environments where companies can train their algorithms on supercomputers—will become available.
