Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair, known for frequently implementing tactics to encourage passengers to pay extra, has announced plans to phase out paper boarding passes and check-in desks by May 2025.
According to Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary, passengers will be strongly urged to check-in online or via the airline’s mobile app before arriving at the airport. Failure to do so will result in a £55 fee when boarding the flight. O’Leary also noted that 60% of passengers currently use the app, and he expects this figure to rise to 80% by the end of 2024. By May 2025, customers will have no other option but to use the app for check-in.
This shift is part of Ryanair’s ongoing efforts to streamline its operations and encourage digital adoption among its passengers.
