Pilots and cabin crew of Discover Airlines, a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, have announced a four-day strike, potentially causing disruptions at all airports across Germany. The strike, reported by Deutsche Welle, is set to begin on Tuesday, August 27, and is the result of a conflict that arose following negotiations with the Verdi union, which had recently secured its first collective agreements for Discover’s pilots and cabin crew.
The Cockpit union, representing the pilots, and the UFO union, representing the cabin crew, are working to bypass the existing pay agreements between Lufthansa and Verdi, which they view as a competitor. Cockpit and UFO claim that Verdi lacks sufficient membership within the airline and argue that the union was created by Lufthansa as a negotiating partner.
Discover Airlines operates out of Frankfurt and Munich, with a fleet of 27 aircraft and nearly 2,000 employees. The impending strike could significantly impact flights across Germany during its duration.
