A new airport, Çukurova Airport, is set to open on August 10 on the Mediterranean coast in the city of Mersin. The grand opening ceremony will be attended by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The new airport’s launch comes 13 years after the initial tender was held. Strategically located between the cities of Mersin and Adana, the airport spans an area of 800 hectares and is designed to handle up to 8 million passengers annually. The 3.5-kilometer runway can accommodate passenger aircraft of any type. The project’s cost was approximately €244.5 million, funded through private investments.
The airport infrastructure includes a terminal covering 110,000 square meters, an apron of 217,000 square meters capable of hosting 40 aircraft, a cargo apron, and a general aviation parking area of 56,000 square meters, which can accommodate up to 34 aircraft.
The Turkish government aims to increase the number of operational airports in the country to 61 by the year 2053, highlighting its commitment to expanding and modernizing the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
