Residents of Mallorca are gearing up for a demonstration against the negative impacts of mass tourism on the island. The protest, organized by the platform “Menys Turisme, Més Vida” (Less Tourism, More Life), will take place on Sunday, July 21st, at 19:00h at the Intermodal Station public transport station in Palma.
The platform, comprised of around 80 sub-groups, is calling for a change of course in Mallorca’s tourism model. Their demonstration, titled “Canviem El Rumb: posem lÃmits al turisme” (Change Course: Limit Tourism), aims to raise awareness about the strain current tourism levels are placing on the island’s resources, infrastructure, and residents’ quality of life.
A Call for Change
The organizers of the protest emphasize the need for immediate action. Their message is clear: “It’s time to take to the streets, get organized and stand up for real change, to stop the impacts of the current tourism and economic model.” They advocate for a tourism model that prioritizes the well-being of residents, the environment, and the island’s natural beauty.
The demands of the platform likely include:
- Limiting tourist numbers on the island
- Diversifying the tourism industry
- Addressing the rising cost of living due to tourism
- Protecting Mallorca’s natural spaces
This protest is not an isolated event. It reflects a growing movement in Mallorca and other popular tourist destinations in Spain and around the world. Residents are increasingly vocal about the negative consequences of mass tourism and are demanding a more sustainable approach.
