The Grand Luang Prabang, a historic landmark in Laos, is set to transform a hotel under the auspices of the Spanish hospitality giant Meliá Hotels International. This endeavor marks Meliá’s debut in both the Republic of Laos and Southeast Asia, with the rebranding process of the renowned resort expected to take a year. During this period, the property will continue to welcome guests.
Introduced in 2022, the Meliá Collection encompasses unique hotels within the group’s portfolio, aiming to offer distinct experiences to travelers. Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, expressed optimism about the rising popularity of destinations such as Luang Prabang among modern travelers seeking novel and authentic experiences.
Noteworthy for its rich cultural heritage and architectural splendor, the city of Luang Prabang is safeguarded by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Comprising 75 rooms, The Grand Luang Prabang is situated on a six-hectare hill overlooking the Mekong River, affording breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and the river. The complex includes the palace, known as the Siengtheo Palace, erected in 1920, along with several annexes. The palace’s former resident, Prince Petsarat, who once served as the country’s prime minister during World War II, is revered among the Laotian populace.
Rooms feature balconies offering views of lush gardens, lotus ponds, and picturesque surroundings, while the interiors boast traditional wooden furnishings.
Meliá Hotels International made its foray into the Asian market in the 1980s with the opening of Meliá Bali. Since then, the region has become strategically significant for the group, with a portfolio comprising 50 operational and development hotels in Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, China, and now Laos.
