Louvre May Move Mona Lisa to Underground Chamber

Paris Louvre is considering relocating Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Mona Lisa to a separate basement room. In this way, museum staff seek to avoid public dissatisfaction with the work, ARTnews reports.

The Louvre receives 9 million visitors annually, most of them coming to see the famous Mona Lisa. This experience is often annoying and disappointing for tourists, with one recent analysis of 18,000 reviews deeming the Renaissance portrait “the world’s most disappointing masterpiece.”

The new underground chamber will be part of the future reconstruction of the Louvre with a new entrance to the museum. Visitors will be able to bypass the entrance in the glass pyramid and enter directly into the underground rooms: one specifically allocated for the painting and another for temporary exhibitions.
