Severe Frost Causes Train Delays Across Finland

On Tuesday, January 2, trains across Finland are operating with delays due to severe frost, reported by Yle, citing the state railway company VR.

Only one-fifth of long-distance trains are running on schedule in the second half of the day, after 12:30. Meanwhile, the majority of suburban trains, namely 70%, are adhering to the timetable.

According to VR, long-distance trains are running with delays of 15-45 minutes, while suburban trains have delays of less than 15 minutes. Some individual routes have also been canceled. The delays are caused by severe frost, leading to the freezing of moving train components.

Finland issued a warning of severe frost, expected to last at least until Thursday. Meteorologists caution that the frost can be potentially hazardous across the entire country.

On Monday, temperatures in the southern and central parts of the country remained mostly between 10 to 20 degrees below zero. Additionally, strong winds intensified the cold in the south. In the north, temperatures in some areas are expected to drop to -25 to -35 degrees Celsius.

Due to heavy snowfall in Norway, thousands of consumers were left without electricity. In the village of Nikkaluokta in northern Sweden, a record winter temperature of -41.6 degrees Celsius was recorded on Tuesday, following similar cold conditions in Finland.
