Madrid-Barajas International Airport is set to become the largest airport in Europe by 2031 with an ambitious plan for extensive reconstruction. The project includes the expansion of multiple terminals, the construction of a technological building in front of the terminals, and the reconstruction of other facilities. These changes will increase the airport’s capacity by 28%, allowing it to accommodate and serve 90 million passengers annually. Currently, Barajas handles 50.6 million passengers.

The project is expected to create 60,000 new jobs in Madrid.

As of now, the busiest airports in Europe are Istanbul Airport with 64.3 million passengers per year, London Heathrow with 61.6 million, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport with 57.5 million, and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol with 52.5 million. Madrid-Barajas aims to surpass these figures after the completion of the reconstruction project.
