Makhachkala Airport, situated in the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region, has resumed both incoming and outgoing flights following recent disruptions caused by mass unrest. Hundreds of people stormed into the airport and rushed onto the landing field, chanting antisemitic slogans and seeking passengers arriving on a flight from Tel Aviv.
Effective from 14:00 Moscow time, Uytash Airport, as it is commonly referred to, is now fully operational once again. However, it should be noted that flights operated by the airlines “Azimuth” and “Red Wings” connecting Tel Aviv to Mineralnye Vody and Makhachkala will be temporarily redirected to other Russian cities.
The damage incurred at the airport due to the mass disturbances that transpired on the previous day is currently estimated to be in the range of several million rubles, as stated by the airport’s director, Said Ramazanov. The incurred damage has affected various equipment, infrastructure facilities, surveillance cameras, and fencing on the premises.
Sixty people were detained in the unrest, it is not clear if charges had been filed against any of them.
