Ryan Blaney claimed a dramatic victory in the NASCAR Cup Series race at EchoPark Speedway after emerging from a tense three-wide battle on the final lap of overtime following a lengthy weather delay.
The Team Penske driver dominated much of the event, winning both opening stages after starting from pole position before holding off late challenges to secure his first Atlanta victory of the season.
Late Overtime Decides the Winner
Blaney crossed the finish line ahead of Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell after an intense battle in overtime. However, Wallace was later penalized for passing below the double yellow line on the final lap, dropping him from second place to 29th in the final classification.
Christopher Bell was promoted to second, while Carson Hocevar and Ty Gibbs completed the top four finishers.
Weather Causes More Than Three-Hour Delay
The race was interrupted for 3 hours and 9 minutes after lightning was detected within eight miles of the 1.54-mile oval, prompting NASCAR officials to suspend the event, clear the track and ask spectators to leave the grandstands.
Rain followed shortly afterwards, with racing eventually resuming at 12:02 a.m. local time after caution laps and pit stops. The event concluded at approximately 1:45 a.m. Monday morning.
During the lengthy delay, Blaney said he “took a nap and ate a little food,” while Kyle Larson joked that the restart came well past his bedtime.
Blaney Overcomes Late Scare
Despite controlling much of the race, Blaney faced a tense finish after brushing the outside wall with 29 laps remaining following contact with Wallace. The impact appeared to damage the right side of his Ford, and Blaney reported a “terrible” vibration over team radio.
Rather than pitting for repairs, Team Penske kept the car on track, a decision that ultimately paid off as Blaney maintained enough speed to defend his position through the closing laps and overtime restart.
Late Crash Triggers Overtime
The decisive overtime period was set up after a multi-car accident with five laps remaining involving several contenders, including Kyle Larson, Chase Briscoe and Riley Herbst.
Earlier in the race, AJ Allmendinger also brought out cautions after first spinning with 67 laps remaining before later suffering a tire failure that sent his Chevrolet into the wall.
Team Penske Continues Atlanta Success
Blaney’s Stage 1 victory continued Team Penske’s impressive record at EchoPark Speedway, where the organisation has now won the opening stage in six of the last eight NASCAR Cup Series races.
Championship leader Denny Hamlin recovered from 28th on the grid to finish 12th, while Tyler Reddick, winner of February’s Atlanta race, climbed from 31st on the starting grid to finish eighth after another strong recovery drive.
The result strengthens Team Penske’s momentum as the NASCAR Cup Series heads into the next phase of the 2026 season, with Blaney adding another statement victory to his championship campaign.
