Italy Issues Red Heatwave Alerts in Major Cities
Italy’s health ministry has placed 15 cities under its highest-level red heat alert, including Rome and Milan, warning residents and visitors of potentially dangerous conditions.
The number of cities under red alert is expected to rise further, reaching 16 on Wednesday as temperatures remain exceptionally high across much of the country.
A red alert is issued when weather conditions pose a risk not only to vulnerable groups such as older people and those with underlying health conditions but also to healthy individuals.

Older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions remain among the most vulnerable groups during heatwave events.
Authorities are encouraging residents to drink plenty of water, remain in shaded or air-conditioned environments where possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon temperatures.

The current heatwave follows a series of record-breaking temperature events recorded across Europe in recent years.
One of the most notable records was set in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2022, when temperatures reached 40.3C in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, marking the highest temperature ever officially recorded in the country.
Scientists have repeatedly warned that extreme heat events are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting and more intense, increasing the risks to public health, infrastructure and agriculture across the continent.
