Third Death Reported at Carnival Celebration Key After Cruise Passenger Falls Into Water

An 88-year-old American cruise passenger has died after her mobility scooter plunged off a pier at Celebration Key in the Bahamas, marking the third reported death at the destination in less than a year.

The incident happened at around midday on Saturday while the Carnival Celebration cruise ship was docked at the port, according to local reports.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that the woman lost control of her mobility scooter and drove off the pier into the water.

Emergency Response Could Not Save Passenger

In a statement, Carnival said onboard and port teams responded immediately and successfully retrieved the passenger from the water.

“Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive,” a company spokesperson said.

The cruise line added that the deceased was taken into the care of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the coroner’s office following the incident.

Local reports indicated investigators believe the passenger may have struck her head against the hull of the vessel during the fall.

Third Death At Celebration Key Since Opening

The latest tragedy marks the third reported fatal incident connected to Celebration Key since the destination opened less than a year ago.

Last year, a 79-year-old man died after drowning while snorkelling near a beach area at the resort destination.

In a separate incident, a 74-year-old woman also died after experiencing difficulties while swimming in a lagoon pool.

In both previous cases, lifeguards pulled the individuals from the water and attempted CPR, but were unable to revive them.

Carnival Extends Condolences

Carnival Cruise Line said its thoughts are with the family of the deceased passenger following the accident.

The incident is expected to remain under investigation by Bahamian authorities.
