Passengers traveling through Palma de Mallorca Airport should prepare for delays as multiple strikes by airport workers are scheduled to take place between late July and early August during the peak summer travel season.

Several unions representing airport maintenance, ground equipment and infrastructure staff have announced a series of 24-hour strikes running from July 27 to July 30.

Swissport Staff to Join Industrial Action

Swissport, one of the world’s largest providers of airport ground handling and cargo services, has also scheduled strikes on July 28 and on August 1, 4 and 8.

On those dates, Swissport employees will stop work from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Airport officials have warned that July 28 is expected to be the most disruptive day, as several groups of employees will strike simultaneously during one of the busiest periods of the holiday season.

Passengers Advised to Arrive Early

While widespread flight cancellations are considered unlikely, travelers should expect longer waiting times and delays, particularly at check-in desks and baggage drop facilities. Passengers departing during the morning and evening peak periods may experience the greatest disruption.

Passport Control Delays Continue Across Spain

The strikes come as several Spanish airports continue to experience some of Europe’s longest passport control queues following the rollout of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES).

According to Ryanair, airports including Tenerife South and César Manrique-Lanzarote have seen repeated delays due to slow document processing and lengthy passport control lines for both arriving and departing passengers.

Travelers have also reported waiting up to two hours at passport control in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Málaga and Alicante. Passengers traveling through Spanish airports this summer are advised to allow additional time for airport procedures and monitor updates from their airlines.
