Barcelona has secured a place among the world’s leading culinary destinations after being ranked fifth in a new global list of the best food cities for 2026 compiled by Time Out.
The ranking was based on a survey of more than 24,000 residents worldwide, complemented by input from chefs, restaurant critics and industry experts. The study evaluated not only the quality of food but also affordability, accessibility and the types of dining experiences that local residents believe best represent their city.
The results highlight the growing importance of gastronomy in travel decisions, with many tourists increasingly choosing destinations based on culinary experiences rather than traditional sightseeing alone.
Barcelona Leads The European Union Ranking
Among cities in the European Union, Barcelona achieved the highest position, placing fifth globally behind only Lima, Bangkok, Mexico City and London.
The Spanish city’s culinary identity has been shaped by centuries of Mediterranean influences and historical traditions. Today, Barcelona is widely recognized as one of the centers of Spain’s modern food culture, combining world-renowned restaurants with traditional markets, neighborhood cafés and family-run eateries.
According to Time Out, the city’s food scene stands out for its diversity and its ability to blend innovation with authentic local flavors.
Food Tourism Continues To Evolve
The study found that travelers are increasingly looking beyond Michelin-starred restaurants when choosing destinations. Authentic food markets, street food vendors, local bakeries and neighborhood establishments are becoming just as important as fine dining experiences.
These experiences allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of local culture and daily life while exploring a destination through its cuisine.
As a result, cities with vibrant and accessible food scenes are attracting growing interest from international travelers seeking more meaningful and immersive experiences.
Other European Cities In The Global Top 20
Several other European destinations also performed strongly in the ranking. Athens placed ninth, with evaluators highlighting the Greek capital’s ability to reinterpret traditional cuisine through both historic tavernas and contemporary restaurants.
Lisbon ranked tenth thanks to its popular cafés, bakeries and affordable modern dining scene. Naples secured fourteenth place, earning praise for its cafés, pastry shops and rich culinary traditions.
Marseille finished eighteenth, receiving high marks for food quality and affordability, particularly in the categories of street food and casual dining. Copenhagen followed in nineteenth place, with residents giving particularly strong ratings to the city’s café culture.
