Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, has announced the signing of a new Taj-branded hotel in Dharamshala, strengthening its presence in Himachal Pradesh and expanding its luxury portfolio in one of northern India’s most popular mountain destinations.
The project, developed in partnership with Atman Resort & Cottages LLP, will transform and expand an existing property while restoring a historic estate that dates back to the colonial era.
Historic estate to be restored
The new Taj Dharamshala will feature 105 guest rooms and suites with panoramic views of the Kangra Valley and the snow-covered Dhauladhar mountain range.
A key feature of the development will be the restoration of the property’s heritage wing, known as White Haven Estate. The building served as the summer residence of a British Viceroy during the late 19th century and remains one of the area’s notable colonial-era landmarks.
IHCL said the restoration will preserve the estate’s historic character while integrating it into a contemporary luxury hospitality experience.
Luxury facilities overlooking the Himalayas
The hotel will offer a range of dining and wellness facilities designed to cater to both leisure travellers and event guests.
Plans include an all-day dining restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a bar and a lobby lounge. Wellness amenities will feature an indoor temperature-controlled swimming pool, a fitness centre and the brand’s signature J Wellness Circle spa.
The property will also target weddings, corporate events and social gatherings through a dedicated banquet hall, terrace event space, meeting rooms and pre-function areas.
Dharamshala’s tourism appeal continues to grow
Located in the foothills of the Dhauladhar mountain range, Dharamshala has evolved into one of India’s most sought-after hill destinations, attracting spiritual, cultural and adventure travellers throughout the year.
The town is internationally known as the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and home to the Namgyal Monastery. Other popular attractions include Bhagsu Waterfall, Dal Lake and Triund, one of the region’s most famous trekking routes.
The destination continues to see increasing tourism demand driven by its natural scenery, cooler climate and growing reputation as a wellness and cultural retreat.
IHCL strengthens Himachal Pradesh portfolio
Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President, Real Estate & Development at IHCL, said Dharamshala’s combination of spiritual significance and tourism growth makes it an attractive destination for expansion.
“Shaped by its spiritual significance and evolving tourism demand, Dharamshala attracts a diverse mix of travellers. IHCL, celebrated for its commitment to responsible destination development, has expanded its leisure itinerary in the scenic state of Himachal Pradesh. We are pleased to partner with Atman Resort & Cottages LLP for this project,” she said.
Representatives of Atman Resort & Cottages LLP said the project would help preserve a historic property while supporting local tourism and employment opportunities.
With the signing of Taj Dharamshala, IHCL’s portfolio in Himachal Pradesh grows to 27 hotels, including 12 properties currently under development, further reinforcing the company’s focus on leisure destinations across India.
