Knicks Shock Spurs In NBA Finals Game 1 After Overcoming Double-Digit Deficit

The New York Knicks have built their playoff run around one simple principle: no deficit feels permanent. That belief was tested again in Game 1 of the NBA Finals as the Knicks found themselves trailing by double digits against a San Antonio Spurs team that had spent most of the night dictating pace, forcing difficult shots and controlling the defensive battle.

Yet for a team that has repeatedly survived improbable situations throughout this postseason, the scoreboard never seemed to trigger panic.

Spurs Defense Frustrates Knicks Early

For much of the first three quarters, New York struggled to create clean offensive looks.

San Antonio’s defensive structure consistently disrupted rhythm, with aggressive perimeter pressure forcing difficult possessions while interior protection limited scoring opportunities around the basket.

Jalen Brunson, normally the engine of the Knicks offense, endured one of his toughest stretches of the postseason.

After suffering a collision late in the first quarter that briefly sent him to the locker room, Brunson returned but struggled to find efficiency.

Brunson’s Difficult Night Reflects Larger Offensive Problems

Midway through the third quarter, Brunson finally found one of his cleanest opportunities of the night.

Created through ball movement and penetration, the shot represented exactly the type of offense New York had spent much of the game searching for.

But the attempt failed to fall.

At that stage, the missed opportunity felt symbolic of the Knicks’ night.

San Antonio Builds Commanding Lead

The Spurs continued capitalizing on their momentum.

Strong defensive sequences quickly turned into transition opportunities while young stars continued applying pressure offensively.

When San Antonio extended the lead to 14 points, the situation looked increasingly difficult.

Against a team that had already eliminated the defending champions and won more than 60 games, the margin felt significant.

The Knicks Lean On Their Greatest Strength

What happened next felt familiar.

Throughout this postseason, the Knicks have repeatedly erased large deficits by slowing games down, increasing defensive pressure and trusting late-game execution.

Even when trailing deep into games, they have consistently shown an ability to remain composed.

That resilience has increasingly become their identity.

Game 1 Reinforces What Makes This Team Dangerous

Championship teams are often judged less by their best moments and more by how they respond when things go wrong.

For large stretches of Game 1, almost everything went wrong for New York.

Shots failed to fall. Their best player struggled. The opponent controlled tempo.

Yet somehow, the feeling remained the same as so many nights before.

The Knicks have spent the past month proving that being behind does not necessarily mean being beaten.
