Cologne Cathedral To Introduce €12 Entry Fee For Tourists Starting July

Visitors planning trips to Cologne this summer will soon face a significant change as Cologne Cathedral prepares to introduce admission charges for tourists for the first time.

Starting 1 July, tourists visiting one of Germany’s most famous landmarks will need to pay €12 to enter, ending decades of free access to one of Europe’s most visited religious sites.

Church officials say the decision reflects the growing financial pressure associated with maintaining one of the world’s most recognized heritage attractions.

Tourist Entry Will Become Paid From July

Beginning in July, standard admission for tourists visiting Cologne Cathedral will cost €12.

Reduced pricing of €6 will apply to students, school groups, trainees, accompanying teachers and holders of social support passes.

Children under 13, visitors with severe disabilities and accompanying carers will continue receiving free access.

Religious services and worship activities will remain accessible without charge.

Officials Say Costs Are Driving The Decision

Church representatives emphasize the new charge is intended as a visitor contribution toward maintaining the building rather than a traditional entrance ticket.

According to cathedral officials, operating and preserving the site currently costs approximately €44,000 every day.

Those costs include maintenance, security, staffing and ongoing preservation work required to protect the historic structure.

The cathedral remains one of Germany’s most expensive heritage sites to maintain.

One Of Europe’s Most Visited Landmarks

Cologne Cathedral attracts approximately six million visitors annually, making it one of Germany’s most visited tourist attractions.

The Gothic landmark has long operated with free access despite large visitor numbers and rising operational costs.

As visitor volumes continue increasing, many heritage sites across Europe are increasingly reviewing funding models to support preservation efforts.
