Munich Airport Temporarily Closed After Suspected Drone Sighting

Munich Airport temporarily suspended operations after pilots reported a suspicious flying object near the airfield, prompting a large-scale police response and the temporary closure of both runways.

The disruption lasted for more than an hour before authorities declared the airport safe and resumed normal operations.

Suspicious Object Report Triggers Airport Shutdown

According to police, pilots reported spotting a suspicious object near Munich Airport shortly before 9:00 a.m.

Authorities suspected the object could have been an unauthorized aircraft or drone operating near the airport perimeter.

As a precaution, airport operations were suspended while police launched an investigation.

Runways Closed During Security Operation

Both runways were temporarily shut while officers searched the airport area for signs of drone activity.

Police deployed multiple units across airport grounds and also used a helicopter to assist with aerial searches.

The temporary closure affected departures and arrivals during the morning operating period.

No Drone Found During Investigation

Authorities confirmed that searches conducted by Federal Police failed to identify any suspicious objects or evidence of drone activity.

Following the investigation, the alert was lifted shortly after 10:00 a.m.

Airport operations resumed normally once security checks were completed.

Growing Concern Over Drone Incidents Near Airports

Unauthorized drone activity near airports has become an increasing concern for aviation authorities across Europe.

Even unconfirmed sightings can trigger operational disruptions because of the risks drones pose to aircraft during takeoff and landing.

Airports increasingly rely on rapid response procedures because even short runway closures can create significant knock-on delays across airline networks.

Operations Return To Normal

Following the all-clear, Munich Airport resumed normal flight operations.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the original sighting involved an actual drone or another object, and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
