Sudden Cold Snap Heading Toward Spain
A powerful mass of unusually cold air moving south from Greenland is set to trigger a dramatic shift in weather conditions across Spain and the wider Iberian Peninsula starting on Thursday.
Meteorologists warn that temperatures will fall sharply across northern and inland parts of the country before the colder air spreads into southern, eastern and coastal areas.
The incoming system is expected to bring temperatures between 8 and 13 degrees Celsius below seasonal averages in many regions, creating conditions more typical of late autumn or even winter despite the middle of May.
Freezing Temperatures And Frost Expected Inland
The coldest conditions are forecast for Saturday morning, when overnight cooling combined with lighter winds and clearer skies could produce near-freezing or sub-zero temperatures in mountain districts and interior regions.
Frost is expected to return in some inland areas, especially at higher elevations where temperatures could fall below zero by dawn.
Even daytime temperatures are expected to remain unusually low for this time of year. In large areas of inland Spain, afternoon highs may struggle to exceed 15 degrees Celsius.
Parts of southern and eastern Spain are also forecast to experience noticeably cooler conditions, with many areas taking on an autumn-like atmosphere.
Strong Coastal Winds Trigger Weather Warnings
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued yellow weather warnings for strong coastal winds in parts of Andalucia.
The alerts cover several coastal provinces, with winds expected to reach up to 60 km/h from the west and southwest between early morning and late evening on Friday.
The warning zone stretches along parts of the Mediterranean coastline from Estepona toward Murcia, while strong westerly winds are also expected to affect Granada and Almeria.
Forecasts indicate that skies will remain mostly clear in many regions, although cloud cover is expected to increase gradually inland.
Weak to moderate showers could develop over mountainous areas and parts of eastern Spain.
Cooler Conditions Across Andalucia
Temperatures across Andalucia are expected to remain below normal throughout the weekend.
Maximum daytime temperatures are forecast to range from around 21 degrees Celsius in Jaen to approximately 26 degrees in Malaga and Seville.
Weak showers may also affect parts of the Costa del Sol and Almeria, although rainfall is expected to remain isolated and relatively light.
Balearic Islands Face Unsettled Weekend
The cooler weather pattern is also expected to affect the Balearic Islands, where isolated thunderstorms and periods of drizzle are forecast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The latest forecasts highlight another period of highly variable weather across Spain as spring conditions continue to fluctuate sharply heading toward the second half of May.
