Red Passport Holders Face Travel Risk Under New EU Rules

UK holidaymakers are being urged to check their passports immediately, as outdated documents could disrupt travel plans during the peak summer season.

Travel experts have issued a warning that many British travelers still using pre-Brexit red passports may unknowingly fall foul of strict validity rules enforced by multiple countries.

Six-Month Rule Could Catch Travelers Off Guard

Many destinations worldwide require passports to remain valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel. Known as the “six-month validity rule,” this requirement is widely enforced and can lead to denied boarding if not met.

Travelers with older red passports are considered particularly at risk, as their documents may be closer to expiry than expected.

EU Entry Rules Are Different – But Still Strict

For travel within the Schengen zone, the rules differ slightly but remain stringent.

UK passport holders must ensure their document:

Is less than 10 years old on the date of arrival
Has at least three months of validity remaining beyond their planned departure from the EU

Failure to meet either condition can result in being refused entry.

Pre-2018 Passports May Be Misleading

A key issue affecting many travelers is how passport validity was calculated before October 1, 2018.

Previously, when renewing a passport early, any remaining time on the old passport could be added to the new one. This means some passports may show an expiry date that exceeds the standard 10-year validity period.

However, under current EU rules, only the original issue date is considered – not the extended expiry date – which can lead to confusion and invalid travel documents.

Check Before You Travel

Travelers are advised to verify both the issue date and expiry date of their passport before booking or departing.

Official guidance recommends using the GOV.UK passport checker tool to confirm whether a document is valid for specific destinations.

High Risk Of Summer Travel Disruption

With millions of Britons expected to travel abroad this summer, failing to meet passport requirements could result in missed flights, denied boarding or entry refusals at borders.

Authorities are urging passengers not to assume their passport is valid simply because it has not yet expired.
