Singapore Airlines (SIA) has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance its Airbus A350-900 ultra-long-range (URL) aircraft, adding a new four-seat first class cabin and upgrading its existing business-class cabins. This retrofit, expected to be in service by mid-2026, is part of a S$1.1 billion (approximately US$835 million) overhaul aimed at elevating the inflight experience on some of the world’s longest commercial flights, including the 18-hour journey between New York and Singapore.
Currently, the airline’s ultra-long-range Airbus A350-900s offer only business and premium economy seating. With the new first-class configuration, these aircraft will feature 70 business-class seats, an increase from the current 67, alongside 58 premium economy seats, down from 94. The upcoming cabin configuration will bring a refreshed level of luxury and privacy to passengers, particularly in the new business-class suites, which will feature sliding doors – a growing trend among airlines to cater to travelers seeking privacy and comfort.
In addition to the ultra-long-range planes, Singapore Airlines will revamp 34 long-range Airbus A350s, maintaining 42 business-class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and increasing standard economy seating from 187 to 192.
SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong emphasized the airline’s commitment to “push the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity,” although specific details about the new first-class and business-class amenities remain under wraps. The retrofit will also introduce new in-flight entertainment options, underscoring the airline’s dedication to providing an upgraded experience for long-haul travelers.
This substantial investment not only reaffirms Singapore Airlines’ dedication to luxury and innovation but also reflects its commitment to meeting evolving passenger demands for comfort on ultra-long-haul routes.
