Vintage Arlecchino Train Returns to Tracks with a Stylish Makeover by Prada

The iconic Arlecchino train, a symbol of Italy’s golden age of modernism, has been brought back to life thanks to a stunning restoration by the fashion powerhouse Prada. Initially launched in the 1960s, the train was a beacon of Italian innovation and luxury, and now, after years of neglect, it has returned to the tracks with a fresh, modern twist.

The Arlecchino, or “Harlequin” train, originally took passengers on stylish journeys during the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Named after the vibrant, multi-colored patterns of its seats, the train was known for its luxurious velvet upholstery, futuristic bar, and its cutting-edge design for the time. However, after decades of service, the train was retired in 1986 and left to deteriorate in a storage yard.

In 2009, engineer Cantamessa and his team from Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian State Railways) began a mission to restore the beloved train. Their efforts, joined by the fashion house Prada, culminated in a sophisticated renovation that combines retro elegance with modern functionality. The project was unveiled during the annual Prada Frames symposium held in Milan in April 2025, where the train’s restoration was celebrated as a key part of Italy’s design heritage.

The restoration team worked meticulously to preserve the train’s original features, from its distinctive multi-colored velvet seats to its sleek, avant-garde design. The interiors now echo the 1950s spirit of Italian modernism while incorporating elements that allow the train to travel on today’s electrified tracks. One of the highlights of the restoration is the train’s ability to blend nostalgic beauty with contemporary technology, making it fit for use in modern-day retro excursions.

What truly sets the revamped Arlecchino apart is its unique integration with Italy’s evolving mobility conversation. At the Prada Frames symposium, the train was displayed at two iconic locations: the Padiglione Reale in Milan’s Central Station and, of course, the train itself. The event addressed the broader theme of mobility and infrastructure in today’s society, illustrating how historic design can influence future development.

With its restoration complete, the Arlecchino train is set to offer exclusive retro-themed excursions across Italy, blending past and present in one unforgettable journey. This nostalgic revival of a classic Italian icon is sure to captivate design enthusiasts, travelers, and fashion lovers alike.
