Day visitors to Venice will be charged up to €10 under a new measure aimed at defraying the costs of mass tourism.
It is estimated that approximately 20 million tourists visit Venice annually and that number only increases as each year passes, there are only 270,884 permanent residents in the city. More then a half of all tourists visiting Venice are day-trippers.
They will now be hit with the new charge, which will is likely to be included in the cost of their bus, train or cruise ship ticket and then passed onto the city authorities.
The tax will range from €2.50 to €10 euros per person, depending on the season.
